As the cooler months approach, it’s time to start thinking about your annual flu vaccination. Influenza (commonly known as the flu) is a highly contagious infection that affects the airways and impacts people of all ages. While many recover within a week or two, it can lead to serious complications, hospitalisation, and in severe cases, even death. Most at risk are young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with underlying medical conditions.
Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from influenza. Each year, the vaccine is updated to target the most common circulating strains, helping to reduce the severity of illness and the spread within the community.
The influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over. Under the National Immunisation Program, free vaccines are available for those most at risk, including:
Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
Adults aged 65 years and over
Pregnant people
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Individuals with certain medical conditions
You can learn more about eligibility via NSW Health
Private influenza vaccines are also available for $25 if you are not eligible for a free dose. For families, we’re pleased to offer the new FluMist nasal spray vaccine for eligible children aged 6months to 5years
Flu vaccines are typically available from April, with peak protection needed during the winter months of June to September. It’s best to book early to ensure you’re protected when flu season hits.
Occasionally, people experience side effects after a vaccine, most side effects are mild and short-lived, such as a sore arm, mild fever, or fatigue, and usually resolve within a couple of days. Call your GP if symptoms persist.
