Each October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month shines a light on the importance of early detection, support, and research. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian women, with around 20,000 new cases each year.
Finding breast cancer early makes a big difference. When detected early, the five-year survival rate is 92%. Women aged 50–74 are encouraged to take advantage of free mammograms every two years through BreastScreen Australia. Even if you don’t have a family history of breast cancer it’s still important to stay on top of breast checks and be aware of any changes in your breasts. Lifestyle habits like staying active, eating well, maintaining a healthy weight and reduced alcohol intake can also help reduce risk
Regular self-checks can also help you become familiar with what is normal for your breasts. Look for changes such as a new lump, swelling, dimpling of the skin, nipple changes, or unusual pain. If you notice anything different, it’s important to have it checked by your GP as soon as possible.
