Snoring is a common concern, affecting an estimated 40% of Australian adults, with higher rates in men and increasing prevalence with age. While occasional snoring may be harmless, persistent or loud snoring can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition called Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It is estimated that around 1 in 5 adults have at least mild sleep apnoea, with many cases remaining undiagnosed.

Sleep apnoea occurs when the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, leading to disrupted breathing. This can result in symptoms such as loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, and significant daytime tiredness. Beyond fatigue, untreated sleep apnoea has been linked to more serious health conditions including Cardiovascular disease, Stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Because of these potential impacts, it is important to assess ongoing snoring rather than dismissing it as simply a nuisance. A discussion with your GP is the first step. Based on your symptoms and history, your doctor may recommend further assessment, such as a sleep study.

Sleep studies are often convenient, home-based tests that monitor breathing, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns overnight. For eligible patients, these studies may be fully covered by Medicare, making them an accessible way to investigate possible sleep apnoea. In some cases, referral to a sleep physician may also be recommended.

If you or your partner are concerned about snoring, disrupted sleep, or ongoing tiredness, it may be time to take the next step. Please contact Summers Family Practice to book an appointment and discuss your symptoms with your GP.
