Australia’s sunny summers are perfect for outdoor activities, social gatherings, and fun with family and friends, but they also mean higher exposure to UV radiation, which causes around 95% of melanomas. Despite widespread awareness, nearly half of Australians still do not use enough sun protection during peak UV hours, and only 39% of young adults protect their skin adequately.

This summer, you can enjoy your social life while keeping your skin safe. Sunscreen is just the beginning. Combining multiple strategies is the best way to reduce risk. UV rays can damage skin even on cloudy days, so plan for protection every time you head outside. Whether it’s a barbecue with friends, a beach day, or an afternoon walk, you can protect yourself while staying active and social.

Monthly self-checks are simple and can help spot changes early. Professional skin checks are recommended every 12 months, or every six months if you have fair skin, lots of moles, or a family history of skin cancer. Early detection usually means smaller procedures and better outcomes.

What You Can Do Today

  • Apply sunscreen: SPF 50+, reapply every two hours, more if swimming or sweating.

  • Cover up: Long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UPF-rated clothing.

  • Seek shade: Especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV is highest.

  • Check the UV index: Protect your skin even on cloudy days.

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water while outdoors.

  • Self-check monthly: Look for new or changing spots.

  • Book a skin check: Annually, or every six months if higher risk.

  • Plan social activities safely: Schedule outdoor events in the early morning or late afternoon, and create shaded spaces for gatherings to keep friends and family protected.

Skin cancer can often be treated easily when found early, but waiting can make treatment more complex. Do not put it off until something worries you. Our team provides thorough, full-body skin checks in a calm and supportive environment, with chaperones available for your comfort.

Skin check appointments are offered by Dr William Nguyen (expert), Dr Lucy Rigby, Dr David Lin and Dr Shandith Tennakoon.

Call us on 9482 3500 or book online via HotDoc. A 15-minute appointment now could save you from serious treatment later and allow you to enjoy your summer with confidence and peace of mind.
