At Summers Family Practice we are dedicated to promoting health and wellness within our community. This September 1st we highlight Gold Bow Day, the Australian Thyroid Foundation's self check awareness day.
Thyroid health is often overlooked, yet thyroid disorders affect over 1 million Australians, with women being ten times more likely to be diagnosed than men. Gold Bow Day aims to raise awareness about thyroid cancer and other thyroid-related disorders, encouraging everyone to be proactive about their thyroid health.
Symptoms of thyroid issues can vary widely and may include an enlarged thyroid gland, persistent cough, changes in voice, trouble swallowing, or unexpected changes in weight. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult with your doctor and suggest a Thyroid Function blood test or Thyroid Ultrasound.
Early detection and treatment of thyroid disorders can significantly improve quality of life. It's important to know how to check your thyroid, below is a step by step guide.
How to do a self Thyroid check
Hold a mirror in your hand, focusing on the lower area of your neck, above the collarbones, and below the voice box (larynx). Your thyroid gland is located in this area of your neck.
While focusing on this area in the mirror, tip your head back. Take a drink of water and swallow.
As you swallow, look at your neck. Check for any bulges or protrusions in this area when you swallow.
Don’t confuse the Adam’s apple with the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located further down on your neck, closer to the collarbone. You may want to repeat this process several times.
If you do see any bulges or protrusions in this area, book an appointment to see your doctor.
Let’s work together to ensure everyone understands the importance of thyroid health and the steps they can take to stay healthy. For more information, visit the Australian Thyroid Foundation’s website.
