At Summers Family Practice, we're committed to keeping our community healthy through proactive, preventative care. One of the most effective ways we do this is through vaccination, helping protect individuals and families from preventable illness.

Each year in Australia, influenza affects thousands of people, with significant numbers requiring hospitalisation. The flu isn't just a bad cold—it can lead to serious health complications and, in some cases, even be life-threatening. That’s why protecting yourself with a flu vaccine is so important.

The Harms of Influenza

While many recover within weeks, flu can cause serious complications, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions. It can lead to pneumonia, worsen existing health issues, and in severe cases, be fatal.

Why Get the Influenza Vaccine?

The flu vaccine is the best protection against influenza, reducing the risk of severe illness and community spread. Updated yearly to match circulating strains, it also helps lessen symptoms if you do catch the flu.

Find more information about the flu vaccine from the Australian Government here.

Is the Flu Vaccine Free?

The flu vaccine is free for certain high-risk groups under the National Immunisation Program, including:

  • Adults aged 65 and over

  • Children aged 6 months to under 5 years

  • Pregnant women

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over

  • Individuals with medical conditions that increase their risk of severe flu complications, such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease

For those who do not fall into these groups, the flu vaccine is available for $25.
